Abstract

The article focuses on gender equality, highlighting the equitable and sustainable human development. It seeks, as a general objective, to analyze gender equality in contemporary world in the light of the United Nations International System. Specifically, the objectives are: (a) to investigate the United Nations conception of equitable and sustainable human development; (b) to analyze the United Nations notion of gender equality; and (c) to take stock of the progress of gender equality in the world, with emphasis on economical e political aspect. Through this research, the advances and setbacks with regard to human development and gender equality are examined, questioning: from the human development reports, is it possible to sustain that there has been progress with regard to gender equality, with priority being given to women's occupations in parliaments and equal pay? The hypothesis seems to be positive. Despite latent gender inequalities, there seems to have been progress on gender equality, which has been reflected in an increase in the number of women in parliaments and greater pay equity.
