Abstract

The newly-arrived Fourth Age of the Internet connects artificial intelligence with people’s daily lives, thus being reflected in their opinions and attitudes. Within this context, this work is an attempt to answer the following question: is Democracy at risk in Information Society, mainly in times of web 4.0? In order to do so, initially the new information technologies and the web evolution are commented. Subsequently, the political participation generated by the social networks and the paradox presented by the Internet regarding deliberative democracy are taken into consideration. Finally, the themes of democracy in the social networks, mainly phenomena such as the discourse of hate, fake news and deepfakes, are generally contrasted. The approach method is deductive, whereas the procedure method is monographic; the research technique is bibliographic and documentary. The conclusion reached is that, although the Internet produces a vast uncertainty regarding the veracity of information, a sensation of political efficiency emerges, thus producing benefits to democracy brought about by this technology. Stimulating and protecting the venues for democratic deliberation is a requirement for the future of democracy.
